Vacations have an odd effect. After the third day, responsibilities, both social and professional, start to fall by the wayside. Ideas and activities that would otherwise be taboo suddenly seem less risky. They suddenly seem like they might be a good idea. By the fifth night of vacation, especially if you are more than 752 miles from home, things can get sketchy.

Humans are a funny bunch of characters. When faced with an unsavory task, a task that no one is directly standing over us until we complete it, we are very much tempted to procrastinate. The funny thing about it is that when we procrastinate, a good deal of the time, we substitute another activity that we aren’t too crazy about for the one we are supposed to be doing.

Sometimes we procrastinate when we don’t even know we’re doing it. I can usually tell that I am procrastinating when I find myself doing something that I really don’t like without looking for something else to do. If I find myself methodically cleaning the kitchen, or the bathroom, or my work area, I know that I am just putting off some inevitable task. I try to put this out of my mind until I finish the task, in the hopes that I can get even the slightest thing checked off long ago lost todo list.

I don’t want to directly spill the beans on myself, since you all know who I am, but I thought I would give the pot a stir. So, this week’s theme: what are some of the things you methodically do to procrastinate, and even more juicy, what is the whackiest thing you have done to procrastinate the inevitable?
